Namibian History in short Namibia’s history is rich and complex, shaped by indigenous peoples, colonialism, and a fight for independence.

Originally inhabited by groups like the San, Nama, and Herero, it became a German colony in 1884, known as German South West Africa. After World War I, it was mandated to South Africa, which ruled it under apartheid policies.

The struggle for independence grew in the mid-20th century, led by the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). After decades of armed conflict and international pressure, Namibia gained independence on March 21, 1990, with Sam Nujoma becoming the first president. This marked the end of colonial rule and apartheid, and Namibia began to build a democratic and peaceful nation.
